In 50 words or less, what is this film about?

83 Days is the story of the youngest person in U.S. history to be put to death by electric chair. In 1944, in the segregated southern town of Alcolu, SC, 14 year old negro boy, George Stinney, Jr., fights for his life after being wrongly accused of the murder of 2 young white girls. What happens when the moral compass of the law is tainted by political pressure and racism and when those in power struggle to challenge it? How long will it take for the truth to be told?

Tell us something funny, or sad, or unusual, or crazy, that happened during the making of this film:

In the process of writing 83 Days our writer, Ray Brown, uncovered some evidence and clues that ultimately assisted in Junior's exoneration. He walked away from the script to pursue these leads before ultimately returning to finish the screenplay. His efforts are featured in the full movie, currently in script form.

What connection do you have to Mississippi?

Director Andrew Howell attended USM and has family ties to Hattiesburg, MS.

And why did you enter Crossroads Film Festival?

I was looking for the best festival in MS to showcase 83 Days near to Hattiesburg where I have friends and family from my college years.

Anything else you’d like audiences to know?

83 Days is an important story because it is a "rock bottom" moment, marking one of the lowest points in our criminal justice system. It's important to remember these stories, how and why they happened, so we can learn from them and our future generations won't make make similar mistakes.

83 Days was made 100% on deferment. Every cast and crew member agreed to take little or, in most cases, no money up front and only be paid for their services, only if the full feature is funded. It is only because of their willingness to take a risk with us that this proof of concept was possible.
